More and more wine enthusiasts are storing larger quantities of wine at home. In addition to proper storage temperature and humidity, wine must also be stored free of odors. Read why.

Wine breathes through the cork

As everyone knows, the cork that seals the wine bottle, as well as the capsule, is not 100% airtight. This is done this way on purpose, because wine needs to "breathe." For wine to mature, oxygen must reach it, however in very small quantities. This oxygen reacts with the contents of the bottle of wine, allowing the wine to go through a maturation process.

Clean air

Knowing that wine breathes through the cork, it immediately makes sense that the air in which the wine bottle is stored must be free of harmful odors. After all, air enters the wine bottle and can affect the taste of the wine.

Which odors are bad for wine?

We can't list them all, but here come some: potatoes, onions, leeks, strong-smelling other vegetables and herbs, paint (paint your wine cellar without the wine in it and don't put it in until the smell is out), gasoline and oil fumes (think of a garage, where the car is parked), etc.

How can you avoid harmful odors?

If you own a natural wine cellar, you can make sure that in the same room, in addition to wine, only hermetically sealed foods are kept and foods that do not give off odors.

When storing wine in a wine cabinet, the wine cabinet should be equipped with natural air circulation and there should be a carbon filter in the hole where the air enters. Since such a filter is equipped with active carbon, the filter should be replaced once a year, to ensure that it maintains proper operation.
