How does a wine cabinet create harmony in the room?

Interview with Takeshi Shikauchi,
director of architectural firm S Design Farm.

Takeshi Shikauchi talks about the renovation project of a residential house in Tokyo with a built-in EuroCave wine cabinet in a custom-made furniture in the living room.

Can you describe the architectural firm in a few words?

Our architectural firm creates buildings and spaces where people can come together for relaxation by combining light, air, plants and natural materials.

Are you personally a wine enthusiast?

Personally, I love wine and enjoy exploring new wines. I am not an expert, but I love food and wine. It is very fascinating to see how a wine can differ depending on the dish it is served with.

Is it a luxury, fashionable or just the norm to have a wine cabinet in a home in Japan?

Many customers have wine cellars at home, from small to large. I think the number of individuals with wine cabinets is increasing because of the high temperature and humidity, which is a difficult climate to store wine.

The Ichibancho project

Can you describe the renovation project?

It's a house in downtown Tokyo overlooking the Imperial Palace. Although it's in the middle of the city, it's a place where you can see a lot of nature, like New York's Central Park, so we wanted to create a peaceful space that combines the sophisticated atmosphere of a city with natural materials.

What was your inspiration behind this project?

Japanese houses used to use a lot of wood, such as the temples in Kyoto. Nowadays, there are many modern materials such as concrete and steel, and many apartments in the city center are also made with modern materials. On the other hand, people want nature. I wanted to express the perspective of nature that the Japanese people cherished in a modern interpretation.

The owners wanted to install a wine cabinet in their living room. How did you respond to this request?

I think wine is a part of the interior. Being able to choose the best matching wine and take it out of the wine cabinet while enjoying a meal in the dining room is a scene to enjoy. In that sense, EuroCave 's wine cabinet fits perfectly into the interior.

What about installing a EuroCave wine cabinet?

Taking into account the exhaust of warm air, the Pure series is perfectly suitable for building in.

What was your client's reaction?

The client was pleased that the living room was given a modern and refined look, yet at one with nature. He was also pleased that the warm atmosphere of the EuroCave wine cabinet and Bang and Olufsen television created harmony in the room.

WINE CABINET, A TECHNICAL CHALLENGE

Takeshi Shikauchi reminds us of the complexity of wine storage in Tokyo because of its subtropical climate. Mimicking the exact storage conditions of a natural wine cellar in a wine cabinet remains a technical challenge: constant temperature, little or no vibration, humidity at 75% ... "It's like creating a mini-climate inside the cabinet, a real challenge." In addition to selecting durable materials, aluminum and wood, to design its wine cabinets, EuroCave is developing processes that allow increasingly precise control of the environment inside and outside the cabinet.
